PANJIM: Even as Indian National Congress party is yet to announce their prime ministerial candidate, Goa Congress on Tuesday, backed Rahul Gandhi as the party’s next Prime Minister declaring that he (Rahul) would grant Special Status to Goa to protect its land, resources and unique identity.
“Rahul Gandhi would be the next Prime Minister and he will grant special status to Goa,” Congress spokesman Manohar alias Babu Azgaonkar told media persons this evening.
Azgaonkar said that Gandhi has assured local leaders in Goa that Congress will give special status to Goa once in power during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. “Nehru (Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) did not betray us…he helped Goa to get liberated from Portuguese,” he said.
The former Congress minister was reacting to the BJP accusation that India’s first Pandit Nehru betrayed Goans over granting special status to Goa to protect its identify. Goans have been demanding special status under Article 371 of Constitution of India.
Like Congress, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has also assured Goans to grant special status once BJP comes to power at the Centre as also BJP’s Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, Azgaonkar alleged that BJP-government betrayed people on Medium of Instruction (MoI) issue. Congress leader said that BJP made fake promises on issues like MoI, casino, Regional Plan and mining to come to power. “Now they (BJP) stand exposed,” he stated.
