PORVORIM: As per demands of the gram sabha, the Penha de Franca panchayat has issued notices to illegal constructions in the village.
The villagers had raised the issue of illegalities in Ward 1, 2 and 3 in the gram sabha on November 29 and alleged that former sarpanch Radhika Sawant had turned blind eye to illegal construction activities in the panchayat area.
Speaking to Herald, Sarpanch Safar Phadte stated that she had kept her word by issuing notices to illegal constructions in Wards 1,2 and 3. The panchayat has also served notices to the Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Society Ltd for its illegal constructions and commercial activities at the Malim Jetty.
When Health Department officials inspected the restaurant at the Malim Jetty, they found that it was unhygienic, stated Phadte, adding that no action was taken against illegalities in the panchayat area for the last one year. She has now decided to take strict action against all illegal constructions.
Phadte added that the panchayat is striving hard to collect garbage daily to ensure that Penha de Franca panchayat remains “clean and green”. Meanwhile, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte stated that Phadte deserved compliments for taking action against the illegalities listed by the villagers at the gram sabha. He also stated that garbage collection on door-to-door basis and its disposal has been a success story, and it was possible because of the panchayat’s support.
