PONDA: Goa Dairy temporarily rolled back the hike in price of cattle-feed after milk supplying farmers staged a day-long dharna at the unit’s premises, on Friday.
The officials of the Dairy also promised to hold a meeting with farmers on January 20 to discuss the issue of cattle-feed price hike. Aggrieved at the price hike, dairy farmers held a dharna to oppose the sudden hike in cattle-feed price by Rs 4 per kg from January 16.
The farmers said that they are struggling to stay in the business and the four rupees hike in cattle-feed is unaffordable to them.
Sanjeev Cuncolienkar from Mangueshim said, “We can’t bear this price hike which is done without consulting the farmers.”
According to Goa Dairy, it hiked the cattle-feed price due to GST. But the farmers rejected the reason as invalid “because GST is being implemented since 2015.”
Staging the dharna, the farmers demanded that the Goa Dairy either roll back the increase in cattle-feed price or hike the milk procurement price.
