Much ado has been made over the new Konkani
film on the block, ‘MMS’. The movie, which focuses
on technology’s adverse effects, tackles how girls
are betrayed when in love and find themselves
trapped by lovers who take inappropriate pictures
of them, which are later circulated.
However, the latest development highlights
that the team behind the film doesn’t believe in
ending their need to focus on the social needs
of the hour just there. In the light of the recent
tragedy in Nepal, where 6,204 people are known
to have died in the 7.8-magnitude quake with
13,932 having been recorded as injured, the team
behind the movie have decided that perhaps they
could play a part in generating funds required to
rehabilitate some of the victims of the calamity.
Savio Rodrigues, the film’s distributor, says,
“We felt an innate need to step up to the plate and
contribute towards this cause. There is always a
lot of paper talk about wanting to help for better
causes, but I think that it is fair to say that when it
all comes down to it, the number of people who
come forth is negligible. As such, we wanted to
ensure that we generated as much as we could in
terms of funds that we could send to the primary
relief fund in Delhi.”
In order to raise these funds, ‘MMS’ will be
screened at possibly two venues with one already
having been confirmed. Ravindra Bhavan Margao
will see one screening being conducted on May
9 at 7:30pm. Another likely venue, which is a work
in progress, is Maquinez Palace in Panjim. The
tickets for the screenings will be sold at Rs 100
each, with the sum total of the proceeds being
dedicated towards the relief victims. “We estimate
that there will be approximately 1,750 people at
every screening. Having priced every ticket at Rs
100 enables us to raise a total of Rs 1,75,000 from
the given show. We plan on raising approximately
Rs 5,00,000.”
However, there may still be a shortfall, given
how much the film may potentially generate from
screenings as per its own projections. To this, Savio
adds, “Between the director, producer and myself,
we came to the conclusion that as the money will
be going to a worthwhile cause, we would pay the
balance amount that we failed to generate through
screenings from our personal funds.”
