The committee, headed by noted scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, had interviewed nine candidates on June 10 and submitted its report to Sinha, hours later. Sources said that, P B Nadda, a professor at Himachal Pradesh University and brother of Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Nadda, is being considered for the post.
The current VC, a former director of the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, was appointed in 2012and will retire in October 2015. After Sinha’s refusal to accept the GU Executive Council’s demand to extend Shetye’s term by two years, the State issued an ordinance to extend the VC’s stay in office by a year. The Governor subsequently gave her assent to the ordinance.
Among the nine candidates interviewed was a Goan-origin professor Sachin Vernekar, who is currently attached with Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune.
The others were Prof R B Srivastava of DRDO, Delhi; P Nagabhushan from Mysore University, Varun Sahini of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi; M Chandrashekhar from Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad; S K Upadhyay from Banaras Hindu University; Vishwanatha from Mangalore University and Bijan Nayak from DRDO, Bhubaneswar.
