More than 5,000 industrial managers and supervisors are trained over a decade in the safety practices, thanks to joint initiative of industry and State government.
Green Triangle Society (GTS), a non-government organization founded in the year 2000, has to its credit 77 programmes including eight national conferences till date and count is increasing every year.
“Till date more then 5,000 officers from various industrial sectors including hazardous units have taken training over occupational safety, health and environment (OCHE) within the industrial community since last ten years,” A A D’Souza, member of GTS Board of Directors told Herald.
The training programmes of GTS includes basic safety programmes, electrical safety, environmental management system, environmental and safety legislations in India, hazardous waste management, fire safety, boiler safety, accident causes-prevention-control, industrial hygiene and many other.
The programmes are been highly appreciated by Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers and central body-Director General, Factory Advice and labour Institute (DGFALI), who feels that such programmes gives an opportunity to know the latest developments in the field of OCHE.
“These courses entitle the professionals to get registered with International Registry for Certified Auditors, UK,” D’Souza said.
GTS, chaired by Manguirish Pai Raikar, has over 300 members from the fields of corporate, government sector, medium-small industries and experts on OCHE.
Talking about the future plans of the society, D’Souza said that GTS is planning to have continuous programmes in quality management system, environment management system and health and safety management system.
“Continuing education programmes will help to advice, advocate, encourage and promote methods, procedures and research leading to better safety, health and environment within industrial units,” he stated.
GTS has recently organized environment management system and is now coming up with training programme on quality management system, which would be held from November 8 to November 12.
Similarly, GTS in collaboration with Disaster Management Institute Bhopal and Inwent-Capacity Building International Germany has organized a two-day seminar on Disaster management in Industries.
The seminar, scheduled on November 2 and 3, will have participation of 50-odd candidates from major accident hazardous units in the state. Goa has around 200 registered hazardous factories of which 16 are identified as major hazardous units under Factories Act of 1940 by Government of India.
When asked, D’Souza said that the safety records of Goa are much better then the rest of the country. “In Goa, the rate varies from 4-5 cases per thousand workers, while in the country it is 10-11 cases,” he stated.
