Health Minister, 4 MLAs pledge to donate eyes

MARGAO: Elected representatives showed the way in organ donation in the state on Thursday when Health Minister Francis D’Souza and four other MLAs volunteered to donate their eyes at a program organised by the Gomant Vidya Niketan.

MARGAO: Elected representatives showed the way in organ donation in the state on Thursday when Health Minister Francis D’Souza and four other MLAs volunteered to donate their eyes at a program organised by the Gomant Vidya Niketan.
The Health Minister went a step forward and announced his decision to donate organs as well as his body, even as he assured that the government will take whatever steps required for right direction in organ donation.
Besides the Health Minister, MLAs who have volunteered to donate their eyes are Digambar Kamat, Vijai Sardesai, Sidharth Kuncolienkar and Reginaldo Lourenco. Sardesdai told the media that he would move a private member resolution asking the government to put the guidelines in place in respect of organ donations.
President of the Gomant Vidya Niketan Datta Naik told Herald that Sanguem MLA Subhash Faldesai  had volunteered to donate his eyes at the social conference organised by GVN last month. He said that around 200 plus citizens had volunteered to donate their eyes and organs at the social conference.
Speaking on the occasion, D’Souza said, “From the government side, we are ready to take all possible steps required in this direction. If possible, the government is not averse to explore the possibility of enacting a law.”
