MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday discussed and approved its surplus budget of Rs 7.23 crore for the financial year 2020-21 during an ordinary council meeting.

Chairperson Ryan Braganza initially presented the surplus budget with opening balance Rs 33.11 crore, total receipts for the year 2020-21 is Rs 79.72 crore and the total expenditure is Rs 72.49 followed by the discussion on the surplus budget.
The closing balance of Rs 40.34 crore was then approved unanimously.
The council has estimated an income of Rs 3.50 crore from houses and land tax, Rs 3 crore from imposition of house tax on illegal house, Rs 1 crore from garbage tax from houses while Rs 10 lakh from market areas, Rs 4 crore as income of rent from building, shops, stalls, income from market in form of Sopo Rs 1.20 crore, income from construction licence fee of Rs 3.50 crore for the year 2020-2021.
During the discussion, Councillor Sandeep Falari said that some of the figures mentioned in the Budget statement are not in tune with reality. “The council is not serious in terms of recovery and implementation either from the receipts side or payment side. We are just putting these figures on the paper but we have to see that those figures are actually realised.”
Responding to which, chairperson said that the municipality is lacking as far as recovery is concerned. Meanwhile other councillor demanded effective recovery as major chunk of Budget goes for distribution of salary of staff.
Before concluding the meeting, council congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the historic Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 which offers to grant Indian citizenship to the persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who are seeking refuge in India on the ground of religious persecution and staying in India prior to December 31, 2014.
