Canacona: Canacona locals have demanded that the concerned government authority stop the illegal hill cutting, which is underway in Shristhal panchayat’s Maithal area. Locals have also placed the issue before the local MLA and Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and have threatened to take morcha to the village panchayat office.
According to sources, a company is dumping its chemical waste in the pits formed due to hill cutting. Villagers had raised the issue in the recently held Shristhal panchayat gram sabha when sarpanch Sejal Gaonkar had assured to take action against the company involved.
“How was the company given the permission to do such a thing, which puts locals’ health at risk? The company has dumped around 400 trucks of chemical waste in the pits, which smells intensely toxic,” a local said.
“This waste could negatively affect the natural water resources in the area such as springs, nullahs and wells. The situation will worsen during monsoon,” said another local Pavan Tubki. He also informed that a road has been constructed near the housing colony for the trucks to pass and dump the waste near Maithal. “On an average, around six to seven trucks used to dump the waste here everyday.”
