He was quite frank in admitting at a programme of Aajtak TV news channel that the bullet train will take more time. “Since it is going to be a new thing in India, it requires a lot of feasibility studies before arriving at any concrete decision,” he said, pointing out that his main focus is to increase the speed of the existing trains by improving the infrastructure.
Prabhu was confronted by former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, who dismissed the very idea of the bullet trains as impractical and impossible. “It won’t be possible to roll bullet trains out in India as it needs massive investment on infrastructure,” Lalu said.
The bullet trains were promised by the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections and among the first few announcements made by the Modi government was to have a bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
In fact, its first Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had even proposed Rs 100 crore in his railway budget last year to initiate work on the bullet train project.
