PANJIM: Faulty eyesight due to advancing age can be sorted with a visit to a quality eye specialist. The state of Goa which has a high incidence of people with weak eye sight can now go over to the Vision Care unit based at the Vison Multi-Speciality hospital based in Duler.
Dr Chandrakant Shetye the force behind this hospital said he always wanted to do something for the people of the state. He said “I always wanted to set up a super speciality hospital here. This essentially meant that if someone had cataract we would have someone who is an expert in it to identify and rectify the problem. And that is what we essentially do. We have specialist for the retina, cornea etc.”
Chandrakant who only checks cataract has gained considerable experience over the past 2 to 14 years he has been an ophthalmologist said the services available at his hospital were not present in Goa or Karwar when he started. This meant patients had to go to Mumbai or Chennai for treatment which added to the cost of the entire operation. Life at the hospital was hectic with him having to attend to approximately 100-150 patients a day. This he said was an average day and his other six colleagues were also involved in a similar exercise.
Asked how many operations were conducted in the hospital he revealed that on average it was about 8-10 operations everyday. Asked what the future plans were he said “ Vision care is now open in Panjim as well. At Duler however the eye care facility is in the multi speciality hospital. I plan to build another building and house it separately.”
The eye care facility has a Lasik machine which ensures a person will never have to use glasses for his or her life. The state he now had facilities which were on par with the rest of the country and once could be assured of good quality. With over 60 eye specialist in the state he said there was no need to feel fear when walking in a medical facility in the state.
