Body recovered from canal at Bicholim

BICHOLIM: An unidentified male body was recovered from a canal at Vathadev-Sarvan, Bicholim, on Monday. According to Bicholim police, the deceased is suspected to be in his early forties and the body was sent to GMC morgue in Bambolim. PSI V Majik is investigating.
Porvorim boy kidnapped
PORVORIM: A 17-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at Porvorim on Monday. According to Porvorim police, the father of the victim boy complained that some persons kidnapped his son from his lawful guardianship. PSI Vilesh Durbhatkar is investigating the case.
Marcaim resident found hanging
PONDA: A resident of Marcaim-Ponda was found hanging at his residence on Monday. According to Ponda police, the body of Damaji Sada Guns r was found hanging at his residence. The body was sent to GMC morgue in Bambolim for post-mortem. PSI V Majik is investigating the case.
Verna local succumbs to injuries suffered in fall 
VASCO: A 41-year-old resident of Pirni-Verna died after he fell in a toilet at a company on Sunday. According to Verna police, Bhagwan Nayak was admitted in GMC Hospital in Bambolim after he had a fall in the toilet at a company. He died while undergoing medical treatment. PSI A Shirodkar is investigating the case.
Girl alleges rape by employer
MAPUSA: A girl has accused her employer from Cansaulim of raping her at Mapusa. According to Mapusa police, the victim girl complained that on January 15 and 16, the accused molested her while she was accompanying him. The complainant further stated that the accused offered her intoxicated liquid which she consumed and became unconscious and taking advantage, the accused confined her inside the house and forcefully molested and raped her. The accused threatened the girl not to disclose the incident to any one. PSI R A Kalangutkar is investigating the case.
Pastor’s Day celebrated at Cuncolim
PANJIM: Our lady of Health High School, Cuncolim celebrated the Pastor’s Day in the school on Monday. Every year August 4th is celebrated as Pastor’s Day world wide being the feast of St John Maria Vianney the Patron saint of priests working in the Diocese. On this occassion the teachers conducted a prayer service for the priests working in the Cuncolim church. Flowers, cards, and gifts were presented to Fr Manuel Fernandes, Cuncolim parish priest, Fr Valeriano Andrade and Fr Isidorio Dias, assistant parish priests. Mrs Meena Moraes compered the programme.
Goa Tourism bags Safari India award 
PANJIM:  Goa Tourism has been awarded Safari India South Asia Travel awards in the category for ‘Best State for Water sports’ for the year 2014. This award was given at a ceremony held in New Delhi on August 2 and was received by the Deputy Resident Commissioner of Goa Sadan in Delhi, Ms Valsala Vijayan. Gao Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar said, “It is a matter of great pride that the state of Goa is being recognized for its water sports activities. It is an honor to receive this from the editorial board of an established publication.”
Vidya Vikas Mandal celebrates Founders’ Day
PANJIM: Vidya Vikas Mandal celebrated its 43rd Founders’ Day on at G R Kare College of Law Auditorium at Margao, recently. President of VVM Ganesh Daivajna highlighted some of the important achievements of the Mandal from its inception in 1971 to the present day and also listed some of the major plans the Mandal has drawn up for the near future. Chief Guest Prof Satish Shetye, Vice Chancellor of Goa University, congratulated the Mandal for its remarkable growth during the past 40 years. He observed that the kind of education provided by Vidya Vikas Mandal is in the nature of a public-private partnership, benefiting all sections of society. Prof Shetye stressed the need for a holistic approach to education. 
Bartending courses
PANJIM: The Mixologist Academy of Bartending offers three different courses in bartending. The first one is of basic course (one and half month duration), which provides an introduction to cocktails and the mechanics of mixology and cocktail preparation. The second course is of two months covering advanced bartending skills and techniques. And the third course is a weekend course of 6 weeks duration covering basic mixology and basic flairing techniques. The intake capacity for these courses is 15 students each. The Mixologist Academy of Bartending is located in Porvorim, opposite the HDFC Bank near the Coqueiro Circle. 
Riyaz is BMC dy chief
BICHOLIM: Riyaz Beig was on Tuesday elected as deputy chairman of Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) by 6-4 votes, while no-confidence motion has been moved against Chairman Anisha Vernekar. It may be recalled that in the 10-member council, the post of deputy chairman had fallen vacant after Narayan Betkikar resigned. Beig and Premanand Mayekar had filed their nominations for the post of deputy chairman. Kamlakar Teli, Riyaz Beig, Narayan Betkikar, Balu Birje, Kamlesh Teli and Karuna Govekar voted for Beig. Speaking to reporters, Beig said they have submitted a no-confidence motion against BMC Chairman Anisha Vernekar. “Soon, we will have a BJP panel and I will work for the development of the city,” said Beig.
CME in pathology held
PANJIM: The Indian Academy of Cytologists organized a CME (continuing medical education) programme in Pathology in the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, recently. The CME was chaired by Dr R G Wiseman Pinto and Dr Savio Rodrigues and the faculty were Dr Ravindra Karle, professor of pathology, Rural Medical College, Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Loni, Maharashtra and Dr S L Hiremath, professor and Head of Microbiology, Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bidar, Karnataka. The topics covered were adrenal myelolipoma, ewings sarcoma, myofibroblastoma of male breast and aneurysmal bone cyst.
