The High Court has set aside an order passed by the Inspector General of Prisons rejecting the parole application of life convict Dattaram, alias Premanand Gawas, and directed prison authorities to grant him parole subject to standard conditions.
Gawas, who is currently lodged at the Modern Central Jail in Colvale, was arrested on December 10, 2007, in connection with a murder case. He was subsequently convicted by the Panaji Sessions Court and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The conviction and sentence were later challenged before the High Court, which upheld them in August 2013.
The High Court, while hearing Gawas’ plea against the rejection of his parole application, set aside the Inspector General of Prisons’ order and directed the state prison authorities to grant him parole in accordance with the applicable rules and standard conditions.
The order paves the way for Gawas to be released on parole for the period permitted under the relevant prison regulations.
