One
of the main events of Goa’s tourist itinerary
has got to be the Carnival! In
fact, whether you are from Goa or just visiting, getting into the spirit of the
festival is unavoidable! The
Carnival parades begin from the capital city of Panjim
before making it to the other towns, namely Margao, Vasco and Mapusa. During these four days, there are
peripheral activities hosted as part of festivity.
Apart from the Carnival floats that are happening
today, there
will be other major events taking place in Panjim, such as the Grape Escapade at Campal
grounds, Samba Square at Garcia de Orta, Red and Black Dance near Clube
Nacional, Panjim and traditional tiatr competition at Kala Academy,
Campal.

The
Samba Square 2016,
which is being hosted at Panjim’s Garcia de Orta,
will feature
live entertainment, music, dance performances, a kids’ zone, food stalls and much
more during
the carnival period.
Sanjit Rodrigues, Commissioner of the
Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) who is leading the initiative, says, “The
Samba Square is the People’s Carnival. The event is our effort to celebrate and
revive the nostalgia of the years gone by. Like every year, the citizens of
Panjim have come forward to support this initiative
whole-heartedly.”
Bookworm will be creating a book centre at the
Samba Square where children of all ages can come and enjoy reading the books of
their choice. There will also be a collection of Braille books and special
tactile books created for children with special needs.
Last year, the Panaji Open Library was
launched at the Samba Square. It was a collaborative effort of Panaji First, CCP
and Bookworm. Two ‘book stops’ were permanently set up at Panjim’s Garcia de
Orta with a stock of novels, magazines, newspapers and books for children.
The
ongoing Grape Escapade where ‘Brand Goa’ is promoted to the rest of the world
and visitors get the opportunity to taste the variety wine flavours will be
hosting entertainment too. Today there will be a solo performance by Veeam,
dance performance by Dance-o-phillia, Grapes N Wines themed fashion show by
Harold Andrade and the band Syndicate performing live, while on February 7
there will be a dance
performance by Siddhakala Dance institute, duet performance by Shanice and
Sherize, acrobats by Canon Brothers, dance performance by Seven colours dance
troupe, Grape Escapade Queen Contest and live band ‘The Ventures’.
The traditional
Red and
Black Dance will be held on February 9, 2016.
