Shiroda local hangs to death
PONDA: Two persons died in separate incidents in Ponda taluka on Tuesday. In the first incident, Sachit Ghadi (35) reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Karao-Shiroda. According to Ponda Police, Sachit’s wife had gone to her maternal house on Monday evening and when returned on Tuesday morning, she found the room door locked from inside. Police further informed that since there was no response, Sachit’s brother climbed on the roof and removed the roof tiles and saw the body hanging from the rafter. Ponda Police is investigating both the cases. In another incident, Ramesh Gaude (35) from Chorla-Belgaum was demolishing the mud wall of a house at Nalai-Keri at about 11 am when the mud wall fell on Gaude. Police said Gaude was crushed under the mud wall and reportedly died on the spot. The incident occurred at about 11 am.
Body found in car at Calangute
CALANGUTE: An unidentified body was found in a car near Shantadurga Temple, Naikawada-Calangute, on Monday. According to Calangute Police, the deceased, suspected to be in the age of 30-35 years, was found lying in the car (KA-25 -D-2385). The body has been preserved at GMC Morgue in Bambolim. PSI Harish Gawas is investigating the case.
Decomposed body recovered at Palolem
CANACONA: Canacona Police on Tuesday recovered highly decomposed male body in thick bushes at the Bhikarwada forest near Palolem. According to reports, some person who had gone to cashew plantation got suspicious on getting the foul smell and immediately informed the police. Police rushed to the site and recovered the highly decomposed remains of a male person. The deceased was wearing a long pant and shirt and the body had almost dried up. The body was later sent to Hospicio in Margao for post-mortem and preservation. According to police sources, the human remains are suspected to be that of a man in his late fifties. A cloth bag and two Rs 10 notes were also recovered from the site. Police further informed that there is a pending missing report filed from Gaondongrim about disappearance of a man over a one-and half month ago. Police is investigating to find out the identity of the deceased and cause of death under the supervision of PI Harischandra Madkaikar.
Condolence meet for Fr Antimo Gomes
PANJIM: Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) will organise a condolence meet of its ex-president and ex-treasurer, Fr Antimo Gomes and Prabhakar Tendulkar respectively, on February 28 at 4.45 pm in the Tiatr Academy Goa’s Conference Hall, Campal, Panjim. Fr Antimo Gomes who was appointed as the canon in the Goa Cathedral chapter had served as a Secretary of the Diocesan Board of Education and an ex-Principal of St Xavier’s College Mapusa. He also served as a Parish Priest of Immaculate Church, Panjim. Prabhakar Tendulkar, a fighter for Goan identity, founder Treasurer of DKA and the editor of now defunct ‘Gõykar’ a weekly in Konknni in Roman script expired recently after a prolonged illness at his residence in Mapusa. Prabhakar Tendulkar actively participated in the promotion of Konknni in Roman script since the Portuguese era when he was editing the Konkani section of the newspaper “A Vanguard”.
Sanquelim NGO sponsors cattle shed
PANJIM: Mathagramasth Saraswat Shree Dattaguru Seva Pratishthan, Sanquelim has decided to sponsor the construction of a goshala to house stray cattle. At Valpoi, Akhil Vishwa Jai Shree Ram Gosawardan Kendra is already maintaining a goshala with about 130 cows which has a capacity of only 100 cows. The proposed cattle pound is to ease the stress on the Valpoi pound. The pratishthan appeals to its members to donate towards this cause generously. Restricted water to Ponda, Tiswadi
PANJIM: Due to urgent electrical maintenance works at Opa Water Treatment Plant, there will be restricted water supply to the consumers of Ponda and Tiswadi Taluka on February 27 and 28.
Seven held in raid get police custody
MARGAO: The seven accused arrested by the Margao police in a raid in Margao where four girls were rescued on Monday were today remanded to five days police custody.
The Margao police headed by PI Sudesh Naik had raided Nagu Bar at Chinchal, Kharebhand, and arrested the seven persons, including a woman and four customers under section 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Immoral Traffic Prevention Act.
Among those arrested was owner of the bar Ashok Khandekar, manager Reshma Muzawar and pimp Mohamad Sharif while the arrested customers were Muntu Kumar, Ram Kumar Chotelal, Afzal Sarkar and Arjun H Naik all aged between 30-40 years.
PI Naik informed that police have recorded statements of the rescued victims.
Road hot-mixing work inaugurated
MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva on Tuesday inaugurated road hot mixing work in the tourist hub of Cavelossim-Mobor.
The work was launched by breaking a coconut at the hands of the local MLA. He later told newsmen that the government has taken up the road work from Mobor to Hotel Leela as part of phase I of the project. Caitu pointed out that hot-mixing of the main road from Cavelossim to Varca has already got underway last week at a cost of Rs 80 lakh. “Besides, three other hot-mixing works will be taken up by the government in Benaulim constituency,” he added.
