Navelim VP inspects hutments
MARGAO: The Navelim village panchayat on Wednesday inspected a cluster of illegal hutments at Margao sewerage plant at Sirvodem. The inspection comes following a complaint lodged by the local residents complaining of nuisance.
After the inspection, Sarpanch Frank Fernandes said the panchayat will initiate action against the hutments if the landlord fails to act suo moto. “We have inspected the site since there was a complaint that the hutments are creating nuisance for the people. The landlord has sought for some time to clear the structures. The panchayat is ready to give some time if the landlord is willing to clear the structures by himself”, Frank said.
Panch member Babush Coelho demanded an inquiry to ascertain whether the inhabitants have registered their names on the electoral roll. “The authorities should order an inquiry to find out whether the inhabitants have registered their names on the electoral roll”, he asserted.
Bail in attempt to murder
MARGAO: South Goa assistant district sessions court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Abdul Munaf Khan of Borda, Margao, who was arrested for attempt to murder by the Margao police in connection with the alleged murderous assault on his parents. The judge ordered the release of the accused upon furnishing a personnel bail bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety in like amount. He was also directed to report for three consecutive days from the day of his release to the Margao police in the morning session.
Pedestrian dies after car hits her
MARGAO: A 76-year old pedestrian lost her life when she was hit by a Maruti 800 car at Kirbhat, Nuvem, on Wednesday at 5.30 pm. According to Maina-Curtorim police, Ana Maria Pereira was on her way to her residence when the Maruti 800 car driven by Joao Menino Fernandes proceeding to Raia from Nuvem knocked her down. She sustained grievous injuries and succumbed on her way to Hospicio. The Maruti 800 went off the road and fell into the fields injuring Fernandes who is admitted at Hospicio. An offence of rash and negligent driving has been registered against him.
2 held, released on bail for assault
MARGAO: Cuncolim police have on a complaint from Anthony W Faleiro, owner of a mini-bus, have registered an offence under sections 323, 341 read with 34 of IPC against Abel Fernandes and Gafio Fernandes, Canaguinim, Quepem, driver and conductor of another mini-bus for wrongful restraint and assault. Faleiro in his complaint has alleged that on December 2 at 6.40 pm at the Chinchinim junction, Abel and Gafio wrongfully restrained his bus by putting their bus across the road, pulled out the driver Gokuldas Fondu Velip of Cabo de Rama and assaulted him. They also assaulted the conductor Francisco Gomes of Sirvoi, Quepem and also a passenger Sagun S Salelkar of Canacona, who tried to intervene. Both Abel and Gafio were arrested and released on bail. Further investigation is in progress.
Vijai ridicules CM on Mopa
MARGAO: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai on Tuesday expressed shock that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar chose to bat for Mopa ironically at the inauguration of the new Dabolim airport terminal. He pointed out that the advantage of the hasty inauguration, perhaps to circumvent the Model Code of Conduct, which could be applicable by the time the terminal was fully complete was lost by the Congress when none could reply to the Chief Minister’s politically bullying speech. He, however, said that the Governor’s speech appeared to speak for the concerns of Goemkars with regard to parking at the new terminal.
Theft at Porvorim house
PORVORIM: Cash and other items worth about Rs 1.16 lakh were stolen from a house at Porvorim on Tuesday.
According to Porvorim Police, Dattaram M Naik complained that some persons entered his house by break opening the window grills and stole one wrist watch, one tablet phone, two pairs of earrings, one small gold pendent, one silver pooja thali, three silver pooja samai and cash of Rs 10,500, all worth about Rs 1.16 lakh. Maharashtra native found dead
VASCO: The body of a 35-year-old native of Chandgad-Maharashtra was found lying at Brameshwar temple, Baina-Vasco, on Tuesday.
According to Vasco Police, the body of Rashe Patil has been preserved in GMC morgue in Bambolim. PSI G Salunke is investigating the case.
Apartment at Zuari Nagar looted
VASCO: Gold ornaments, cash and other items worth about Rs 1.37 lakh were stolen from a flat at Birla in Zuari Nagar.
According to Verna Police, Vikrant Gupta of Birla Zuari Nagar and a native of New Delhi complained that between 11.30 pm on December 2 and 6.30 am on December 3, some persons entered his flat by break opening window sliding glass and stole gold necklace, two pair of earrings, one wrist watch, and cash of Rs 890, all worth about Rs 1.37 lakh. Two cars stolen at Calangute
CALANGUTE: Two cars were stolen from an open parking place at Calangute.
According to Calangute Police, Sidhesh Shirodkar of Calangute complained that some persons stole his car (GA-03-P-6622) and also the car (GA-03-P-4970), belonging to Parang Bandekar of Calangute, which was parked in front of his house at Calangute. Head Constable A Gawas is investigating the case.
Fire destroys property at Shiroda
PONDA: Property worth about Rs 2 lakh was destroyed in a fire at Ganganagar-Shiroda on Wednesday.
According to reports, residents saw smoke emanating from a house and alerted the Ponda fire station at about 3.40 pm. There were no occupants when the incident occurred.
Cupboards, a dressing table and furniture were gutted in the inferno. Fire officials managed to bring the fire under control and saved property worth about Rs 3 lakh. Fire officials informed that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
Taleigao local dies in mishap
PANJIM: A pedestrian was killed after he was hit by a motorcycle late Tuesday night near Vasant Vihar colony, in St Inez.
The victim Babu Khan, 45, died while undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College where he was rushed to for immediate medical attention after the accident occurred. However, the rider and the woman pillion rider, who also sustained injuries in the accident, fled from the crime spot. The victim was a resident of Taleigao.
Panjim police have identified the number of the motorcycle GA-04-K-8552 and search is on to nab the rider.
Beach cleaning at Baina beach
DABOLIM: Ex-servicemen (navy) with the support of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and in association with Mormugao Municipal Council organised a beach cleaning programme at Baina beach. In all, 22 jumbo bags of garbage were collected during the beach cleaning programme. Ex-servicemen officers said everyone must come forward to keep its surroundings clean. MLA Almeida stated that it is the duty of every visitor who visits the beach to keep it clean and drop the waste in the garbage bins instead of littering it in the surrounding. He also stated that every person must keep his or her surrounding clean and green, states the press note.

Camp for children with special needs
PANJIM: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in convergence with Artificial Limb manufacturing co-operation of India, Jabalpur (ALIMCO) is organizing a medical camp for distribution of free aids and appliances to children with special needs. The camp will benefit children with total blindness, orthopedic and hearing impairment in the age group of 6 to 14 years. The assessment camp will take place in 3 talukas of Pernem, Ponda and Salcete from 10 am to 4 pm which will be followed by a distribution camp in 2 weeks. For Salcete the camp will be on December 6 at Ravindra Bhavan. For Ponda on December 7, at Block Resource Centre, Ponda and for Pernem be on December 8, at Block Resource Centre, Pernem.

Bastora school resource room turns 10
PANJIM: Towards Inclusion Everywhere in Society (TIES), a parent support group of children with disabilities in association with the Holy Cross High School, Bastora will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Life Skills resource Room, at 9.30 am on December 7, with the chief guest being Rohan Khaunte, MLA Porvorim. Children with disabilities will be partnered with a regular child and together they will participate in various activities such as games, art & craft activities and a music & dance session. The participants will include 50 children with special needs from the 4 resource rooms which function in regular mainstream schools of Goa, with another 50 children from Holy Cross High School, Bastora. The slogan this year is, ‘Inclusion Works…We made it happen.’ A souvenir will also be released to commemorate this event and there will be an exhibition of the works done by the 4 participating resource rooms too. Simultaneously, there will be a get together for parents featuring games and an audio- visual presentation of the activities done by TIES.
Book release of ‘Kristanvancho Zagor’
PANJIM: As a fillip to folk literature in Romi Konknni, Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) will be releasing a research book titled ‘Kristanvancho Zagor’ written by Marcos Gonsalves. The chief guest will be MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh while the guest of honour will be Dr Pandurang Phaldessai, folk researcher and former member secretary of Kala Academy. DKA President Premanand A Lotlikar will preside over the function and Konkani writer Vincy Quadros will compere the function. Well known ‘Zagor’ performer Domingos Mascarenhas and his group will enact select ‘xenam’ (songs) from ‘Zagor’ accompanied by traditional instruments. The function will be held on December 7, at Margao Ravindra Bhavan’s Open Lawn Mini stage at 4.30 pm.
Symposium on space for human welfare
PANJIM: At least 350 people, including scientists from Indian Space Research Organisation will attend the National Academy of Sciences, Ahmedabad’s 83rd annual session and symposium on Space for Human welfare, which will held at NIO, Dona Paula and Goa University from Thursday till Saturday. The convener Dr Manju Sharma said the aim was to give an insight into what we have achieved and what can be achieved. “There will be presentations and talks delivered by eminent scientists. The symposium will not only provide information on our achievements but also be useful in pinpointing he areas of future scope and exploration,” she said. Speaking to the media, University Vice Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye brought out the importance space research has to our daily lives and said around 600 students would get to meet and talk to active researchers to get a first hand look at the way scientists think. Dr George Joseph, former director of Space Applications Centre and ISRO professor, former director at ISAC and Dr K Radhakrishnan, chairman of ISRO will address the symposium. The NASI annual awards will also be presented on December 7.

PANJIM: Rotary Club of Panaji in association with Institute Menezes Braganza is organizing an all Goa quiz competition on ‘Our Goa’ on December 14, from 9 am to 1 pm at Menezes Braganza hall, Panjim, for students of standard 7 to 10 for all Goan schools. The function is open for public. This programme is specially done to inculcate knowledge about our Goa to our youth on the eve of Goa’s Liberation Day. PANJIM: Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Rajendra Arlekar has called for the need to educate students to know more about legislative process and value of our legislative institutions. He was speaking at a prize distribution function organized by Legislature Secretariat in association with Legislators Forum in the Secretariat. Essay and patriotic song singing competitions were organized.
Arlekar further said there is need to enhance the feeling of patriotism in the mind of our youth to make them more responsible to shoulder national responsibilities. Youth are the future of our nation he said. In patriotic song singing Hutatma Bapu Gawas Memorial GHS Chandel won the first prize. In the essay contest, Akshata Marathe of Deepvihar HSS, Vasco stood first in Marathi; Gauravi Kamat of Damodar HSS Margao in Konkani; Semi George of Guardian Angel HSS Sanvordem in English and Pallavi Chavan of Ameya HSS Curti Ponda in Hindi.
