Duping: Three get conditional bail
MARGAO: South Goa additional sessions court on Monday granted conditional anticipatory bail to Sanjay Amonkar of Malbhat-Margao, Sharad Shirodkar and Suraj Fatarpekar, both from Navelim.
The three applicants, who were accused for allegedly inducing depositors to invest in Shine (India) Pvt Ltd with promise of high returns, were ordered by the court to give a personal individual bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety in like amount.
They have been directed to report to the inquiry officer from Tuesday, July 23, for a period of 10 days from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm and to cooperate during the investigations. They have been also directed to surrender their passports till filing of the charge sheet, not to leave the State without permission of the court and not to influence/contact/induce or threaten witnesses or temper with evidence.
Eight persons cheated of Rs 16 lakh
MARGAO: Margao police are on the look out for two persons, including one from Mumbai, for allegedly cheating eight persons from Salcete to the tune of Rs 16 lakh with promise of jobs abroad.
The police on July 20 registered a case of cheating under section 420 of IPC against Jose Rodrigues of Benaulim and Vikramjeet Singh of Mumbai on a complaint from Aldina Rodrigues, who was assured of a job abroad.
Police informed that the residence of Jose in Benaulim was raided but the accused was not found inside and that efforts were on to arrest him. Further investigation in the case is being conducted by PSI Ajeet Umarye.
Two minors nabbed for stealing
MARGAO: Maina-Curtorim Police in the wee hours of Monday nabbed two minors while two other managed to escape while attempting to steal from a shop at Mugali, Ramnagri. They have recovered the articles and cash Rs 2,300 from the duo. Both the minors have been lodged at Apna Ghar in Merces.
Minor’s death: Colva police clarify
MARGAO: Colva police on Monday clarified that 17-year old Marques Edwin Fernandes of Mazilwado, Benaulim, was found hanging dead not in his house, but in a garage.
According to the family of the deceased, Marques had left the house on July 19 night and his body was found hanging by a nylon rope in the garage. Colva police stated that investigation in the case was in progress.
Meanwhile, Maina-Curtorim police informed that Swanil Naik, 18, of Zariwado, Davorlim, committed suicide and was found hanging to a fan in a room. A case of unnatural death has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
Lobo elected Tiverem-Orgao sarpanch
PONDA: Francis Lobo was on Monday elected unopposed as sarpanch of the nine-member Tiverem-Orgao Panchayat.
Incidentally, when the new panchayat was formed, the BJP-supported candidates were elected as sarpanch and deputy sarpanch, who resigned almost after serving a year in office. Deputy Sarpanch Jyotsna Shirodkar resigned a month ago, while Sarpanch Pratap Volvoikar resigned recently. Interestingly, newly elected Sarpanch Lobo and Deputy Sarpanch Sulabha Vajir are reported to be MGP supporters. All the nine panchas were present during the election process and since there was no other candidature, Lobo was declared elected unopposed. Other seven members who were present are Sanket Amonkar, Pratap Valvoikar, Jyotsna Shirodkar, Vithoba Dessai, Chandrakant Gaude, Umedha Khandolkar and Umesh Bhosle.
50 patients avail benefit of ENT camp at Porvorim
PORVORIM: Anagha Vachasunder Pratisthan, Porvorim, in association with Cochlea-Pune for Hearing and Speech organised a health camp for hearing impaired people at PDA Colony, Porvorim. Over 50 patients availed benefit of the camp, where ENT specialist Dr Avinash Vachasunder diagnosed the patients and offered medicines. Audiologist Pravin Agle, Raksha Deshpande, Asha Joshi and Charushila Ranade assisted him. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vachasunder said diabetes, blood pressure, heart ailments and excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco can cause hearing problems for the aged people. “The use of hearing aid is the only remedy for this problem,” added Dr Vachasunder.
Dr Vachasunder further said as per scientific observation and statistics, four infants are born deaf out of the 1,000 newborn babies. “Deafness can occur because of genetic factors, delayed delivery of child or if the pregnant woman suffers from German Measles Rubela disease,” he said.
Guardian Angel conducts various programmes
CURCHOREM: Guardian Angel Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Curchorem, recently organised a Vanmahotsav, wallpaper, diploma day and fresher’s day in the institute. The function was marked with the planting of a sapling by Fr Aurelio Rodrigues, former manager of Guardian Angel Educational Complex, Curchorem, in the presence of priests and others. On the occasion, wall paper on the theme ‘Tourism and Water, Protecting Our Common Future’ was inaugurated by Miracles High School, Sanguem, Headmaster Fr Pio Furtado. A mass was organized on the occasion, while diplomas were awarded to the students of the one-year Diploma in Hotel Management of the winter batch.
Three scholars of the final year, who got distinction and first classes in the recently conducted final year board examinations of the Board of Technical Education, Porvorim, were awarded certificates of merit and mementos.
One dies of electric shock
CURCHOREM: A 22-year-old TV cable mechanic from Kholapur, but residing at Pontemoll-Curchorem, died while he was working on a cable amplifier at a residential building at Bebquegal-Curchorem on Sunday.
According to Curchorem Police, Ajit Kumbhar along with his co-mechanic was working on a cable amplifier to rectify a fault at about 8 pm. However while working, Kumbhar received a shock of strong current and died on the spot.
Police rushed to the site and shifted Kumbhar to Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police said the body has been sent to Hospicio in Margao for post-mortem and PSI Therron D’Costa is investigating the case.
Speed breakers notified
PANJIM: The construction of hump type speed breakers have been notified near Gurukul Primary School/Sai Baba Temple in ward 7 at Durgabhat, Ponda. Traffic signboards ~ one about 8 mts from the junction on road proceeding towards Ponda city and the other about 10 mts from the junction towards Bethoda road (near telephone pole) will be erected. Similarly speed breakers will be constructed near Vidhya Vruddhi Primary School (Kids Nest). Traffic signboards will be set up about 15 mts from the Vidhya Vruddhi Primary School and 15 mts away from the junction towards main city road.
Similarly, Speed breakers will be constructed ~ one about 15 mts from the junction where the roads from Mapusa, Patradevi and Camurlim meet at Colvale, towards Mapusa side; and the other about 15 mts from the junction towards Patradevi side in Colvale in Bardez taluka.
Bus stop and bus bays notified
PANJIM: Bus Stops and Bus Bays in the village of Dharbandora near Deputy Collector’s office at Tamsado Dharbandora, on the road proceeding towards Mollem, near Dhareshwari Hotel have been notified for the convenience of commuters.
Dept of occupational therapy at AVH
PANJIM: Apollo Victor Hospitals launched the Department of Occupational Therapy at their Margao facility. This department is a great support to departments like Orthopaedics, Neurology, Pediatrics, etc.
Dr Priyanka Raikar, a senior consultant will be heading this department. Dr Raikar said, “Early detection and correction of abnormalities in children can increase the quality of their lives in the future immensely.”

Sitaram, Anisha win dance contest
PANJIM: Sitaram Gadekar and Anisha Pilankar won the first place in senior and junior category respectively at all Goa Bollywood dance competition held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, orgainized as part of Srujanotsav by Play Group Margao association with Department of Art and Culture and Ravindra Bhavan Margao.
The prizes were given by the chief guest Damodar Naik. He said that the play group had put in efforts to provide artists a platform to perform and show their talents.
Prominent citizens of Margao were also felicitated.
Praveen Roy bagged the second place and third place went to Yash Sawant in senior category and Omkar Kalwar and Disha Dessai won the second and the third place respectively.
Manisha Naik welcomed while Dr Vibhav Angle introduced and secretary Vishwanath Swar read the annual report.
TATOTE music prog held in Panjim
PANJIM: A music programme was organized by the students and teachers of Taught to Teach Music School Society on July 20, at 4 pm at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall. A number of performances on instruments and vocal in western classical as well as Konkani and Bollywood numbers were presented by the students ranging from 5 years to 60 years. Dilip R Salgaocar Chairman and Managing Director of Geno Pharmaceuticals Ltd was the chief guest. San Anatonio D’Mello President of the Society proposed the vote of thanks and Fiona compered the function.

Manguerish Pai Raikar, President of the Association has urged the NCC cadets, Ex-NCC cadets and youth and citizens to come with their cycles at Azad Maidan and join the rally.
Similarly on July 25 at 7 pm, the association has decided to have a night vigil for the Kargil martyrs by lighting candles at Azad Maidan. A large number of ex-servicemen will be there to pay their respects along with Maj Venugopal Nair of the Department of Sainik Welfare.
Raikar elected Prez of ex-NCC body
PANJIM: Manguesrish Pai Raikar has been unanimously elected as the President of the State Ex-Cadets NCC Association (SENA) at a meeting held on Monday. John Aguiar has been elected as the secretary. The other members of the committee are immediate past president Pradip M Sawant, Vice Presidents Pandurang Hegde, Dr Vinaykumar Pai Raikar and Adv Prachi Sawant. Joint Secretary Sadika Buddashet, Treasurer Pramod G Naik and Joint Treasurer Pralhad Mayekar. Catechetical students’ library opened
PORVORIM: With an aim to inculcate in children the habit of reading faith enriching literature, Catechetical Cell of Holy Family Parish, Alto-Porvorim, opened a Catechetical students’ lending library in the parish hall on Sunday. A catechism student, Sarah Sundriyal, inaugurated the library.
Addressing catechism students, Parish Priest Fr Tomas Lobo encouraged them to avail opportunity given by the Catechetical Cell of the parish to read spiritually enlightening literature and develop a life-long companionship with good books that are the storehouses of knowledge, the most accessible of counselors and the most patient of teachers.
Mapusa school excels in contests
PANJIM: Students of Saraswat Vidyalaya High School, Khorlim-Mapusa, won several prizes at State level in several competitions organised by Anagha Vachasundar Pratishtan, Porvorim. 25 schools from the State participated.
Sneha Parsekar was declared as talented student of the year for competing in several competitions including group discussion, essay writing, general knowledge, aptitude, memory and other such tests.
Arnavi Bharne bagged the first prize in story telling and Samruddhi Vaigankar secured second prize in monologue, while Malvika Pankar bagged consolation prize.
Teachers Suvarna Singnapurkar and Deeplaxmi Moghe guided the students. School Headmaster Sanjiv Prabhu Dharwadkar congratulated the students.
GVM’s BEd College AGM held
CURCHOREM: GVM’s BEd College Principal Dr Allan Jose Abreo has advised teachers to connect their knowledge with real life experiences.
He was addressing the teachers of Curchorem Super School Complex-I during their annual general body meeting at Sarvodaya School hall, Curchorem.
“A teacher should touch the student rather than teach the student. A teacher should connect his/her knowledge with real life experiences,” stated Abreo.
Earlier, a minute silence was observed to pay respect to the departed souls of flood victims at Uttarakhand, CSSC-I President Vaman Bhadri appealed to teachers to take care of physical and mental aspects of students.
“Once smaller children are properly nourished, there will not be any problem when they grow and we can expect good citizens,” he said.
Forms for music exam available
PANJIM: Examination forms for various music examinations in vocal, harmonium, tabla, Kathak and Bharatnatyam for November session of Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai, are available at Bal Bhavan, Campal, Panjim which is an accredited study centre recognized by ABGMM to conduct music examination.
The completed forms should be submitted by August 11.
