MAPUSA: Parish Youth Nuvem outclassed Nerul Sports Club 4-0 to emerge champions of Calangute Panchayat Cup football tournament organized by Calangute Association at Poriat ground, Calangute, Sunday. Nuvem led 2-0 at half time.
Backed by their supporters, Nuvem felt at home and established easy control in the heavy outfield. They displayed their supremacy right from the word go and did not allow their rivals to settle down.
After enjoying the lion’s share of ball possession, Nuvem broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Standly Colaco’s screaming 30-yarder stunned Nerul goalkeeper Xavier Estrocio.
Spurred by the success, Nuvem doubled their lead two minutes later, after hard-working Joe Colaco intelligently set up Presley Colaco, who skillfully dribbled past Nerul defender Udyaneshwar Madgaonkar inside the box and beat the rival custodian with ease.
Post resumption, Nuvem continued their dominance as Joe found Alrich Pereira, who slotted home past helpless goalkeeper Xavier to make it 3-0 in the 33rd minute.
It was all over for Nerul in the next minute, when Standly scored his second goal of the evening with a powerful header off a well-measured free-kick from the left flank by Nuvem’s Remy Colaco.
Nerul were out of steam but came close to scoring on one occasion but Royston Pereira’s curling free-kick did not trouble Nuvem goalkeeper Francisco Fernandes.
In the final quarter, Nuvem could have added to their rival’s misery but Clyson Pereira’s penalty-kick hit the crossbar.
Chief guest, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar handed the winners trophy to Parish Youth Nuvem alongwith Rs 40,000 while the runners-up had to be content with the runners-up trophy and Rs 30,000.
