We all accustomed to the statements viz – “Change is inevitable” or “Change is the only constant”: still I doubt any of us might have envisaged such a world stopping Covid-19 initiated lockouts which brought the life of all to a grinding halt. We all are focusing on masking, washing and social distancing with a single most goal of not contracting the virus and extend our life span. Irrespective of class, colour, religion and economical status we are all placed in an equal platform by a miniscule virus!
Though this globe had seen millions of deaths due to wars, pandemics, earthquakes and tsunami, attitudes of super powers, its leaders and common people are hardly changing. Even after such huge scale disasters and casualties of Covid-19, war of words between leaders of China and USA and accusation still continues as if this planet and life is granted for them forever. It is sickening to note such negative attitude and unwillingness to learn through introspection.
It is high time mankind responds positively, course correct their attitude and lifestyle, stop exploiting the nature further and initiates steps to mend all the wrong doings so that our future generations can live in this planet joyfully.
At this crucial juncture it is appropriate to recall the poem No.192 Yaathum Oore,Yaavarum Kelir from Tamil classic Puranaanooru written by Kaniyan Poonkunranaar 2000 years ago. Verbatic meaning and my inference (in bracket) are listed below:
Every villager and every person is from my kin. (Love all-universal brotherhood. It is important to treat everyone equally irrespective of their region, religion, caste or creed. It is important to treat all people like they are your own kin).
Like a lot of things in life, bad and good, cannot be attributed to others… they come from within us. Likewise, agony and relief of agony come without any external triggers … from within us. (Self introspection… look within for all happenings. It is important to treat different situations in life the same – happiness and sorrow are after all two sides of a coin. Why rejoice at happy events and mull over sad events. Aren’t these an integral part of life?) Death is not unheard of or new. (Death being certain and only once, does not keep on panicking and dying for trivial things in life).
It is unnecessary to rejoice that life is sweet or complain in anger that life is bitter. (Lead life with balancing of emotions-EQ. Like rafts drifting along in the rapids of a great river, dashing over the rocks after a downpour , our lives, no matter how dear, follow its own course. We know this from the vision of wise seers who can see. So, we are neither awestruck by the great nor do we belittle the ‘not so great’ (Respect and treat everybody – especially the under privileged equally. In other words don’t be star stuck while looking at a celebrity and don’t feel superior to a commoner on the street because you perceive yourself as better).
Everything is equal in this world – all people, all emotions, all events … if you learn this important lesson, everything becomes simpler. You eliminate most vices that are ruining the world today – bias (based on almost anything – race, religion, gender, region), greed, envy ….
