Actor Ranya Rao Involved in Gold Smuggling Case; DRI Investigates Gold Concealment at Airports

Actor Ranya Rao, involved in a gold smuggling investigation, informed the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) that she received gold in two packages, which were wrapped in a heavy-duty tarpaulin-like material.

In her statement, Ranya recounted receiving a call from an unfamiliar number on March 1, 2025, instructing her to pick up gold bars at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. She also mentioned that the caller requested her to transport the gold to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Ranya further detailed to the DRI that after she received the packages, she headed to the washroom near the dining lounge. Upon opening the packets from the unknown caller, she discovered 12 gold bars, neatly arranged in three separate bundles of four full bars each. Additionally, one of the bundles contained five cut pieces stacked together.

Afterward, she explained that she had wrapped the gold bars around her calf and waist using adhesive tape, which she purchased from a store near the airport. Ranya also mentioned to the officials that she had used scissors to trim the tape to the right size and had kept them in her bag beforehand, knowing she couldn’t take scissors into the airport.

To hide the gold attached to her body, Ranya said she used a tissue roll from the airport restroom. Additionally, she revealed that she had tucked some gold bars under the soles of her shoes and placed the remaining cut pieces in her jeans pockets. In her statement to the DRI, Ranya admitted that she had watched YouTube videos to learn how to wrap and conceal gold on her body. The actress also claimed that the caller had previously informed her that the gold would be given to her in the form of ingots.

The order to halt the CID investigation mentioned that Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta is currently looking into the potential involvement of Ranya’s stepfather, K Ramachandra Rao, who holds the rank of Director General of Police (DGP). Gupta’s investigation will concentrate on the details and situations surrounding the misuse of protocol-related privileges and Rao’s participation in the matter.
