Delhi Government Introduces Weekly ‘No Car Day’ for Officials to Cut Fuel Consumption

The Delhi Government has introduced a series of fuel-saving measures for government officials, including a mandatory weekly “No Car Day”, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to reduce petroleum consumption across the country.

The new directives have been issued by the Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department as part of an 11-point action plan aimed at promoting sustainable transport and energy conservation.

Under the new policy, officials and employees have been instructed to minimise the use of government vehicles and instead rely on public transport, electric vehicles and pooled transportation systems wherever possible.

One day every week will now be observed as “No Car Day”, during which officers and staff will be encouraged to commute using public transport or shared transport arrangements.

The departments have also been directed to rapidly shift towards electric mobility by expanding the use of electric vehicles in government fleets and installing EV charging infrastructure across offices and establishments.

In addition to promoting cleaner transport, the guidelines encourage officials travelling for meetings and events to use shared vehicles whenever feasible. Departments have also been advised to reduce unnecessary travel and prefer virtual meetings to save fuel and resources.

The directive further discourages foreign trips for official purposes unless absolutely necessary, as part of broader efforts to curb fuel consumption and promote efficiency in government operations.

The measures come into effect immediately and are expected to support the government’s larger push towards sustainability, reduced carbon emissions and energy conservation.
