Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has stated that there are many who wish to see the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s grave from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, previously known as Aurangabad. However, he emphasized that the grave is a protected site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and any removal must adhere to legal procedures.
Fadnavis made these comments on Saturday in response to BJP’s Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosale, who is a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and has called for the tomb’s removal from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

The chief minister expressed, “We all share the same belief, but action is required through legislation since it is a protected monument. The previous Congress government ensured its protection under the ASI.” This statement was made during the ‘Gurmat Samagam’ event, which honored the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth guru who played a pivotal role in establishing the Sikh faith.
Recently, comments made by Samajwadi Party’s MLA Abu Asim Azmi, praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, sparked controversy. As a result, he was suspended from the Maharashtra legislative assembly until the conclusion of the budget session on March 26.
