However, weather could emerge as an additional challenge for both teams, with rain forecast at various stages during the opening four days.
India will be keen to make a strong start after losing two of their last three Tests. While the visitors have spent considerable time preparing for Sri Lanka’s spin-heavy conditions, they could also be forced to contend with interruptions caused by rain. Early showers are expected in Galle on Saturday, although conditions are likely to improve before the scheduled start of play. An overcast sky could remain throughout the day.

Why Is Sri Lanka Tour Important For India?
The series carries significant World Test Championship (WTC) implications for both sides. India are currently fifth in the standings after disappointing home-series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa, while Sri Lanka sit sixth. With both teams looking to climb the table, every point could prove crucial as the WTC cycle progresses.
India’s red-ball fortunes have come under scrutiny, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also facing pressure. Shubman Gill’s team therefore needs a positive result in Galle, particularly after a limited Test schedule in 2026. India have played only one Test this year, against Afghanistan in June, and last toured Sri Lanka for a Test series in 2017.
The visitors arrived in Sri Lanka 10 days before the opening Test and gained valuable match practice by defeating Sri Lanka Cricket XI in a three-day warm-up game. Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul are among the most experienced members of the squad when it comes to playing in Sri Lankan conditions.
Spin Challenge Awaits India In Galle
India are expected to rely heavily on spin, with Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav likely to play key roles. The third spin option could be either Manav Suthar or Saransh Jain, while Mohammed Siraj is expected to lead the pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
The biggest challenge for India could come from Sri Lanka’s spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis. The Indian batting lineup, featuring Gill, Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Devdutt Padikkal, will need to show patience and strong defensive technique. Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan are also competing for a place in the playing XI.
Sri Lanka will enter the series without Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka and could field an inexperienced bowling attack. That gives India an opportunity, but the hosts will have the advantage of familiar conditions and a pitch expected to assist spin as the match progresses.
