Several states, including Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, have already implemented the change.
Governors in these states announced the renaming through social media posts, reflecting a coordinated nationwide transition. The move follows a Ministry of Home Affairs notification issued on November 25, 2025, directing that Raj Bhavans and Raj Niwas across the country be redesignated as Lok Bhavans and Lok Niwas, respectively.

“In tune with the transformational and inspirational leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that has ensured participation of people across all segments of society in the onward spectacular march towards VIKSIT BHARAT, Raj Bhavans and Raj Niwas across the country have been uniformly decided to be renamed as LOK BHAVAN and LOK NIWAS respectively.”
The renaming initiative is being presented as a symbolic shift meant to reinforce the connection between constitutional offices and public service, signalling a broader push toward inclusive governance under the Centre’s development vision.
