How many seats are needed to form government in West Bengal?

To form the government in the West Bengal Assembly, a party or coalition needs a simple majority of 148 seats out of the total 294 seats. This “magic figure” is required to cross the halfway mark and stake a claim to power in the state.

In the ongoing counting trends, results are being declared for 291 out of 294 constituencies, with leads available across all seats. According to the latest updates, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 191 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is ahead in 95 seats. The CPI(M) is leading in one seat, and other candidates are ahead in four constituencies.

The trends indicate a strong performance by the BJP, which is moving towards a potential historic victory in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the TMC, which has been in power for 15 years, is trailing in the current count, though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is leading in Bhabanipur. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is also leading in Nandigram, a closely watched seat.

The elections were held in two phases, recording an exceptionally high voter turnout of over 92 percent. Security was tightened with large-scale deployment of Central Armed Police Forces across the state.
