A tragic incident in Gandipet, under Narsingi in Hyderabad, claimed the life of an eight-month-old infant on Thursday, raising serious concerns about safety lapses in residential areas.
The child’s family, who had recently migrated from Maharashtra in search of livelihood, was staying in a rented accommodation. According to local residents, the infant was playing outside the house in the afternoon when the child moved towards an open water sump situated next to the building. In an unfortunate turn of events, the baby slipped and fell into the uncovered tank before anyone could react.
Family members and neighbours rushed to rescue the child and immediately took the infant to a nearby private hospital. However, doctors declared the baby dead on arrival.
The grieving parents were inconsolable, having moved to the city only months ago with hopes of building a better future.
Police from Narsingi station reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. Officials noted that the sump had been left open without a secure cover, pointing to possible negligence. A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway, including examining responsibility on the part of the property owner.
Local residents have urged authorities to enforce stricter safety measures, including mandatory covering of open sumps and water tanks. The incident highlights how preventable hazards in residential spaces can lead to irreversible loss, underscoring the need for greater accountability and vigilance.
