Maharashtra Minister Dhananjay Munde has tendered his resignation following the arrest of one of his close associates in relation to the shocking murder of a sarpanch in Beed district that occurred in December. Munde, who was responsible for the portfolios of food and civil supplies, resigned at the direction of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after his aide, Walmik Karad, was implicated in the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village.
Fadnavis confirmed that he had accepted Munde’s resignation and had submitted it to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Sources indicate that Fadnavis’s decision followed a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, during which they discussed the political implications of a chargesheet in the sarpanch’s murder case and the findings regarding Karad’s alleged involvement.

Dhananjay Munde, aged forty-nine, serves as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Parli constituency in Beed for Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He is the nephew of the late Gopinath Munde, a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and is also a cousin to Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde. Munde became affiliated with the NCP in 2013 and aligned himself with Ajit Pawar during the party’s division in 2023. His previous roles include serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the legislative council and holding a ministerial position in the government led by Uddhav Thackeray.
