MEA Prepares Contingency Plan for Indian Nationals in Iran; No Evacuation Required at Present

In view of the evolving situation in Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has begun preparatory measures to facilitate the return of Indian nationals who may wish to travel back to India, while clarifying that there is currently no need for an evacuation.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the Jammu & Kashmir Students Association, stated that the evacuation process initiated earlier by the Indian Embassy has been put on hold until further notice. He explained that the decision to plan an evacuation was taken purely as a precaution amid concerns of a potential conflict. However, following official assurances that there is no war-like situation or imminent escalation, the requirement for evacuation does not arise at present.

Khuehami further said that officials of the Indian Embassy remain in direct contact with Indian students in Iran. He added that if the situation changes and evacuation becomes necessary, embassy officials will personally reach out to students and convey information through official communication channels.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday held a telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which both leaders discussed the prevailing situation in and around Iran.

Separately, the MEA has issued an advisory urging Indian citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iran. According to the ministry, approximately 10,000 Indian nationals are currently residing in the country.
