Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi-led government is working towards ensuring that Pakistan does not receive water from the Indus river system in the coming years. He clarified that the Indus Waters Treaty has not been terminated but has been kept in abeyance following India’s decision after the Pahalgam terror attack.Patil said the Centre was making every effort to stop water from flowing across the border. “Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took this decision, every effort is being made to ensure not a single drop flows there,” he said.The minister added that the matter was being closely monitored at the highest level. According to him, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is personally overseeing developments while various departments work on implementing the government’s decision.His remarks come amid continued tensions between India and Pakistan. India had earlier announced that it was placing the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the terror attack in Pahalgam.Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs rejected a recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration constituted under the treaty. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India does not recognise the tribunal, calling it an illegally constituted body. He stated that all decisions and awards issued by the court are considered null and void by India.The dispute is linked to Pakistan’s objections regarding the Kishenganga and Ratle hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, Pakistan is facing growing concerns over water availability, with reports indicating severe supply shortages in Karachi.
