The Goa Forest Department on Tuesday conducted a review meeting to assess wildlife protection, forest management and conservation initiatives across the state.
A key focus of the meeting was the recent leopard death, which has drawn public attention. Officials stated that a postmortem has already been conducted and viscera samples have been sent to Gorewada Zoo for further examination. Authorities said an inquiry is currently underway and action will be taken once the exact cause of death is confirmed.

The department also discussed improving road networks within Mollem and other protected areas to strengthen patrolling and monitoring activities. Officials believe better access will help field staff respond more effectively to wildlife-related incidents.
In another significant decision, tour and trekking operators working in protected forest areas will now be required to register with the Chief Wildlife Warden. Visitor entry in sensitive zones will also be regulated to improve safety and reduce disturbances to wildlife.
The meeting further reviewed turtle conservation efforts, wildlife movement tracking systems, rescue operations and veterinary services. Officials also reaffirmed the department’s target of carrying out five lakh plantations this year under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.
