Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday landed at the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Field (ELF) aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, underlining India’s growing focus on strengthening strategic airlift capabilities and connectivity in challenging terrain.
The C-130J Super Hercules, operated by the Indian Air Force, is a rugged turboprop transport aircraft designed for operations in difficult and austere environments — conditions common across India’s mountainous and remote regions. Its ability to land and take off from short, unprepared airstrips makes it particularly vital for operations in high-altitude areas such as Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.

India procured 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the United States, with the first six inducted in 2008 and the remaining six delivered between 2011 and 2019. The aircraft is regarded globally as one of the most reliable tactical airlifters, capable of performing a wide range of missions beyond conventional cargo transport.
Apart from troop and equipment movement, the C-130J is employed for special operations, aerial refuelling-supported long-range flights, paradrop missions, search and rescue (SAR) tasks, and delivery of relief material during natural disasters. Its versatility has made it a cornerstone of India’s rapid response and humanitarian assistance efforts.
Saturday’s landing at the new ELF marked the second occasion that PM Modi travelled aboard a C-130J. The first instance was in November 2021, when he landed on the Purvanchal Highway in Sultanpur as part of an operational demonstration.
The aircraft’s ability to operate without requiring long runways is a key reason for its suitability in special operations. A C-130J was also used to evacuate Indians stranded in Sudan in April 2023, highlighting its role in overseas humanitarian and evacuation missions.
According to Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the C-130J Super Hercules, tactical airlift missions prioritise low-altitude and slow-speed operations rather than sheer speed, with an emphasis on the capability to access almost any location to support diverse mission profiles.
The C-130J Super Hercules is described as the only medium-sized airlifter designed specifically for tactical missions that meets complex operational requirements. Its defining features include excellent short-field takeoff and landing performance, lower fuel consumption, reduced carbon footprint, extended range, high pallet and passenger capacity, and superior survivability.
PM Modi’s landing at the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Field not only demonstrates India’s expanding infrastructure for emergency and defence preparedness but also underscores the critical role of advanced airlift platforms in safeguarding national security and ensuring rapid response in remote regions.
