A powerful dust storm swept across Delhi-NCR on Monday afternoon, bringing strong winds, dark skies and reduced visibility across several parts of the region. In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert, warning residents of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and gusty winds over the next few hours.
According to the IMD, wind speeds were expected to range between 60 and 80 kmph across Delhi and neighbouring areas. However, stronger gusts were recorded at some locations. The Safdarjung observatory reported intense winds during the afternoon, while Palam witnessed gusts reaching nearly 92 kmph, equivalent to 50 knots.

The sudden change in weather led to dust clouds engulfing roads, markets and residential areas, significantly reducing visibility. Videos circulating on social media showed strong winds sweeping through the city as people rushed indoors and motorists slowed down amid difficult driving conditions.
The weather department warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall were likely to affect Delhi-NCR. Residents were advised to stay indoors, avoid open spaces and keep away from trees, electric poles and weak structures that could be damaged by strong winds.
