A delegation of six Supreme Court Justices, led by Justice B R Gavai, who also serves as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, is scheduled to visit the conflict-affected region of Manipur this weekend. Their purpose is to assess the sufficiency of relief supplies and legal assistance available to individuals residing in relief camps. The judges, including Justices Gavai, Vikram Nath, M M Sundresh, K V Viswanathan, and N Kotiswar Singh, are primarily attending a ceremony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Manipur High Court. Before the High Court was established, a bench of the Gauhati High Court operated in Imphal.
Justice Surya Kant was initially scheduled to be part of the delegation of judges visiting Manipur; however, he withdrew from the trip a week ago due to prior commitments. Justice R Mahadevan is expected to join the remaining five judges on this visit. Justice Gavai has chosen to fulfill his responsibilities as the chairperson of NALSA while attending the High Court function. He stated, “Together with NALSA officials, we will visit the affected hill and valley regions of Manipur to assess whether sufficient supplies, food, and clothing have been provided to those displaced from their homes and currently residing in relief camps.”

He further clarified, “Our visit is not related to the ongoing disputes between communities. It is solely focused on providing assistance to those in need through NALSA. NALSA will distribute relief supplies and offer legal support to anyone who requires it.” Justice Singh holds the distinction of being the first individual from Manipur to serve as a judge of the Supreme Court. He took his oath of office as a Supreme Court Judge on July 18 of the previous year, having previously served as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
