G. Ranganathan, proprietor of Kancheepuram-based Sresan Pharmaceuticals, was arrested in Chennai on October 9, 2025, by a Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with contaminated Coldrif cough syrup linked to the deaths of 21 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Ranganathan was detained from his Kodambakkam residence, and police conducted a joint search of the company’s manufacturing unit in Sunguvarchatram. The facility along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway has been sealed, and the registered office remains shut.

Laboratory tests in Tamil Nadu confirmed the syrup contained toxic substances, prompting the Madhya Pradesh government to ban Coldrif and all other Sresan Pharmaceuticals products. Investigations are ongoing under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other applicable laws.
