India will soon get its own official caller identification system that eliminates the need for apps like Truecaller. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved the Department of Telecommunications’ proposal to launch the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service. The feature will display the verified name of a caller, as registered with telecom operators, directly on the receiver’s screen. This government-backed initiative aims to enhance transparency and curb spam and scam calls.
The CNAP system will draw data from telecom subscriber databases, ensuring authenticity and accuracy. It will be enabled by default but users can opt out through their telecom provider. Trials conducted across 4G and 5G networks showed technical challenges, which are being resolved before full rollout. Experts believe CNAP will significantly boost digital trust and communication safety across India, potentially making it one of the largest verified caller ID systems globally.
