PANJIM: HCN TV channel will telecast Goa Yuva Mahotsav live on January 13 from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm. Goa Yuva Mahtosav, the biggest festival of performing art for the youth organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal, is being organised in Pernem this year, being inaugurated by the Chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

Kraft Work Nite on Jan 26
PANJIM: The 24th edition of the traditional free musical beat show “Kraft Work Nite” will be held on January 26, from 7 pm, at St Agostinho grounds, St Cruz on the occasion of Republic Day.
Over the last 23 years, the show was always attended by a capacity crowd coming even from the far ends of South Goa. This year, the show is to be attended by even more music fans as Goa’s topmost bands like India, Brothers-In-Arms, Sigmund & The Sunshine Tribe, William Rodrigues (One-Man Band), Open Highway, ICU (All girls band) will be playing live music. Goa’s top most DJ Joel and Ryan Nogar will rock the show and will be compered by Arthur. The show is being sponsored by Seagram and Furtados.
Miraculous Cross feast at Anjuna
PANJIM: The annual feast of Miraculous Cross at Anjuna Hill will be celebrated on January 14 at 4.30 pm followed by Mass. This year the feast is being celebrated by Flora Dias and Wilber/Fiona Mascarenhas.
Charitable trust organizes outing, learning for students
PANJIM: Help & Help Charitable Trust recently organized an outing for children and staff of Peoples School for ‘appropriate learning’, by taking them for a movie ‘The Life of PI’ at Inox, Panjim. The movie, which is a story of a boy who survives 227 days after a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger, was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and staff. This is one event of the numerous charitable activities of Help & Help, a trust focused on welfare works for the physically & mentally impaired, the sick, the poor, orphans, the old and destitute.
OL Divar HS Parents Day held
PANJIM: The Our Lady of Divar High School held its annual Parents Day cum prize distribution in the school premises, Divar, recently. Various skits, meaningful songs, colourful dances were presented by the students. The Jungle dance by the pre-primary kids received huge applaud. Akshay Volvoikar and Anifa D’Mello were declared the students of the year in the boys and girls categories respectively. Ciano King Fernandes was voted as the best monitor of the secondary class while Anisha Naik was voted the best monitor in primary class. Francis Serrao, proprietor of Crosscraft Pvt Ltd alongwith his wife Cellay Serrao was the chief guest. Serrao in his address praised the efforts of the Principal Fr. Anil Kumar, Headmaster John Fernandes and all the teachers, who were giving in their best for the all-round development of the students. HM John presented the annual school report. Earlier, the principal Fr Anil welcomed the gathering while teacher Luna Pacheco introduced the chief guest. Amey Volvoikar and Aloysia Fernandes from Std X and teacher Indrayani Patil compered the programme. Assistant Parish Priest of Piety Church Fr. Francis Pereira, Chairman of PTA Eddy Picardo, Treasurer Elvis Aguiar were also present. Senior most teacher Irene Florindo proposed the vote of thanks.
Woman dies after consuming poison
PONDA: A 23-year-old woman from Shiroda died after reportedly consuming poison at her residence on Friday.
According to Ponda police, Remisha Fernandes had consumed the poison on January 9 and was later admitted to a private hospital in South Goa where she breathed her last on Friday afternoon. Police said the deceased was married about three years ago and since her death has occurred within seven years of marriage, the case will be investigated by the Ponda Deputy Collector. Ponda police is investigating the circumstances leading to her death.
3 held for transporting pigs illegally
PORVORIM: Mapusa police arrested three natives of Belgaum on charges of illegally transporting 42 pigs from Belgaum to Goa in a van. According to police reports, two animal welfare activists, John Fernandes and Mahadev Mestry, were proceeding towards Merces on their motorbike when they noticed some animals in the van while overtaking the vehicle near Green Park hotel. They stopped the van and demanded for the permit to transport the animals. When the tempo driver could not produce the documents, they summoned the police. A police team rushed to the sport and found 42 pigs crammed inside the vehicle in an unhygienic condition. Police then seized the pigs and detained the van.
Police also booked a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Transport of Animals Rules, 1978 and the Indian Penal Code.
Goods seized in raids
PORVORIM: The Weights and Measurement Department on Friday raided five shops in Mapusa Friday and seized goods worth Rs 4 lakh.
According to reports, the officials seized mobile phone sets, chargers, memory cards, DVDs, grinders, etc.
The accused were booked under the Packaged Commodity Rules as the officials found that the mandatory declaration details as required under the existing laws like date of packing, name and address of the manufacture, MRP, etc, were not mentioned on the boxes of the products.
Rape, molestation cases registered
MARGAO: The Cuncolim and Quepem police have registered separate cases of rape and molestation upon a complaint lodged by a married woman from Morpilla village in Quepem taluka. While the Quepem police has registered a case of rape against two persons, their Cuncolim counterparts have booked four persons from the same village for molestation.
The woman has claimed that she was raped by the duo around three years ago and was being blackmailed by them since then with a clip.
The woman has named the four accused for molestation and the two persons in the offense of rape.
The accused are still at large, the police added.
