MAPUSA: The Department of Archaeology demolished 19 temporary stalls located at the entrance of Chapora Fort on Monday in the presence of Archaeology Director B Madeira, Deputy Collector of Bardez Gaurish Shankhawalkar, Mamlatdar Dasharath Gawas and Joint Mamlatdar Sandeep Gawade.
The Archeology Department carried out the demolition under police protection following complaints from locals that these shops were obstructing the fort beautification work. These stalls were illegal and were obstructing the roadwork leading to Fort.
These stalls which were razed were the ones serving food and juice, while the others selling artificial jewellery, handmade products etc. Sources informed that people had complained about the illegal activities such sale of alcohol at these stalls and hence without issuing any demolition notice the Archeology Department demolished the same.
It may be recalled that when TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai and MLA Vinod Palyekar had inspected the fort, the stall owners were ordered to remove the same which they failed to do so.
