28-year-old woman killed in Mandrem accident

Locals said the presence of mud on the road led to the fatal accident.

PERNEM: In a fatal accident reported at Askawada, Mandrem, 28-year-old Supriya Mhamal died on the spot after coming under the wheels of a truck on Saturday morning.

According to sources, the incident took place at around 9 am when Supriya was proceeding on her electric bike to her workplace from Mandrem to Agarwada. On reaching Askawada, she tried to overtake the truck but lost control of the vehicle and fell on the road and got crushed under the wheels of the truck leading to her instant death.

On receiving information, the Pernem Police team rushed to the spot and conducted the panchanama. 

After being informed about tragic death, the villagers gathered at the spot and blocked the road. 

They blamed the PWD and the contractor who had undertaken the work of laying the underground cables. 

Locals said that since the contractor did not clear the mud and failed to carry out soling of the road, the accident occurred.

Locals and the local panchayat have demanded that the contractor repair the road and carry out the soling work by Sunday failing which they threatened to protest. 

The villagers demanded that the police take action against the contactor.

Meanwhile, the police have booked the truck driver 41-year-old Uttar Pradesh native Mangal Jairam Rai currently residing at Mandrem under Sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC. Further investigation is in progress.
