CALANGUTE: Seven huts have been gutted in fire along Calangute beach early Thursday morning.
Pilerne Fire Station officials estimated the loss at over Rs 20 lakh. The cause of the fire is not yet ascertained. All the fishing equipment stored in these huts and four boats were destroyed.
Pilerne Fire Station in-charge Andrew Lobo said he received a call at 4.20 am informing them about the fire following which they rushed to the site. Fire tenders from Pilerne, Mapusa and Panjim were pressed into service to douse the fire.
“The magnitude of the fire was so huge that the services of 20 fire fighters were used to extinguish it. We took around six to seven hours to bring the fire under control. We returned only by 11.30 am. We estimated that the loss to be over Rs 20 lakh as the concerned people have not given us an estimate of the loss as yet. Besides seven huts, a fibre boat and three wooden boats were also gutted,” Andrew Lobo informed.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo visited the spot to take stock of the situation.
