MARGAO: Unveiling its plan of action to tackle sanitation head on in the State, the government will construct around 90,000 toilets across Goa by 2014 as part of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan scheme, even as PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar unveiled a scheme to build free soakpits for households to take care of the kitchen waste water.
The PWD Minister also announced the government’s new scheme to acquire land for the construction of community toilets and promised to provide toilets even in Balwadi, Anganwadi school, besides urban areas of the state.

Addressing the Salcete taluka program of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan in Margao on Friday, the PWD minister sought cooperation from all quarters to implement the scheme to make Goa clean and beautiful.
Expressing concern over road side storm water drains choked with waste and sewage waters, Dhavlikar said the government would construct free soakpits for household to tackle kitchen and waste water. “We intend to launch two important schemes, one to acquire land for community toilets with bathroom facility and secondly to provide toilets in the urban areas, besides aided and unaided schools.
Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado called for solving the sewage and garbage woes affecting his Navelim village. He said Navelim villagers have to bear the sewage odour from neighbouring Margao and lamented that the Margao Municipality does not accept Navelim waste at Sonsodo.
Ex-Chief Minister Digmabar Kamat urged the government to build toilets in Anganwadi and Balwadi schools. Fatorda MLA VIjai Sardessai said the scheme should be implemented in both the rural and urban areas of Goa.
In his address, Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco called upon the government to acquire Communidade land and hand it over to Panchayats to solve the garbage problem.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco urged the government to implement the sanitation scheme without any discrimination. He urged the PWD Minister not to give the scheme to the cadre.
Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva, Cuncolim MLA were amongst the dignitaries who spoke at the workshop.
