Absconding cop will be caught soon: DIG

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav on Thursday said on-the-run constable Sanjay Parab, the accused in the police-drug mafia nexus case against whom a non-bailable warrant has been issued, was likely to be arrested soon.
Speaking to media persons at the headquarters, Yadav said the police had built pressure at all places where Parab took or was likely to take shelter. The accused has now indicated he would surrender, he mentioned.
Parab has been absconding since this March after the arrest of Police Inspector Ashish Shirodkar and four others for their alleged links with Israeli drug dealer Yaniv Benaim alias Atala.
Police Sub Inspector Punaji Gawas was the sixth person to be arrested in the same crime late yesterday evening. He has been remanded to seven days police custody for further interrogation. Parab’s arrest will raise the total count of arrests to seven.
Shirodkar and the others languishing in judicial custody found themselves in trouble after Atala’s former girlfriend Lucky Farmhouse from Sweden uploaded videos she clandestinely recorded on youtube.com. The videos showed Atala making starling revelations of his connections with some policemen.
On a question whether there was any chance Lucky would come early for deposition as August looked very far, Yadav mentioned, “She has conveyed to us she will come in August, but we have requested her if she could come early. If not we will also explore how we could get her early through legal means.”
Over another question on a PI for the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC), the DIG replied, “There is a shortfall of inspectors in the Goa Police. We require PIs even for South Goa. We are hoping some sub-inspectors due for promotion would become PIs and from one of these we may place one in the ANC. We have to see that a good officer takes charge of that department.”
Yadav said the department was carrying out an exercise to ascertain the exact shortage of PIs. Once this exercise is complete we will know the shortfall, he mentioned.
