MARGAO: Social activists are calling on the government to provide clarity regarding the delay in relocating the historic chapel on Porvorim Road, which was demolished a few months ago as part of road expansion work.

Warren Alemao has reached out to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Porvorim MLA and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, and Archives and Archaeology Minister Subhash Phal Desai, urging their intervention.
He highlighted the demolition of the 460-year-old ‘Kasnichem Kopel’ (St. Anthony’s Chapel) near the NH66 highway in Porvorim, on June 26, this year. Despite the passage of over three months, Alemao expressed disappointment that the government is yet to announce any plans for the chapel’s relocation, emphasizing that this inaction is deeply hurtful to the Catholic community in Goa.
He called for immediate government action, urging accountability for the responsible PWD engineers and advocating for the swift relocation and reconstruction of the chapel to preserve this significant piece of religious and cultural heritage.
Alemao also appealed to the Archaeological Society of Goa to investigate the matter, asserting that the PWD Department should not have demolished such a historic chapel without a relocation plan in place.
