MARGAO: Beleaguered Margao Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello came under the scanner of city based activists as they demanded his immediate resignation in the wake of civic body’s inspection report confirming that his two structures are illegal.
Gonzaco, however, has questioned the demand for his resignation, saying that he has been elected on the post by the City Fathers.
Activist Laurel Abranches told the media that the chairperson should quit on moral grounds after the inspection report clearly indicates that his two structures are illegal. He said the people of Margao will take to the streets if the chairperson fails to step down within a week’s time. “We want to give the Chairperson a week’s time to step down from office. If not, we will take to the streets by mobilising the people of Margao,” Abranches warned.
He pointed out that when the very Municipal Council that Gonzaco is heading has come out with a damning inspection report, stating that his two structures are illegal, the chairperson has no moral authority to continue in office. “Let the chairperson go to the court and challenge the municipal inspection report and come back and occupy the chair,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gonzaco told a section of the media that he has been elected by the Councillors and he will go by the decision of the City Fathers.
