PANJIM: After spending almost nine years in jail, Mahanand Naik will be out for 21 days on parole as the prison magistrate approved the application taking into account his good behaviour in jail.
Naik, convicted or murder and rape, had filed an application seeking 28 days off on parole, however, the police objected to this claiming he was a serial killer, but viewing his good behaviour in jail, the prison magistrate accepted the application limiting the parole to 21 days with a security deposit of Rs 1 lakh in cash
Naik, however, challenged the order of submitting a security deposit of Rs 1 lakh in cash in the High Court of Bombay at Goa claiming he had no funds in cash after which the court opted to give him parole on guarantee of a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh instead of Rs 1 lakh in cash.
Mahanand who hails from Shiroda was arrested in 2009 on charges of murder and rape. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in two murder cases, and acquitted in eight cases. He has also been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for rape.
