After emphatic win, govt seeks to pamper ZPs

More power to district bodies under consideration; ZP Bhavans in each district proposed

PANJIM: The State government is planning to devolve more powers to the Zilla Panchayats, and has proposed constructing a “Zilla Bhavan” each in North and South Goa – a dedicated premises from where the second tier system of local government would function. 

The 49 newly-elected ZP members were administered oath of secrecy in the presence of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho on Monday.

Addressing the new ZP members, the Chief Minister said the government is considering delegating more powers to the ZP body. “The discussion is on with the Panchayat Minister and officials of Directorate of Panchayat. More powers will be definitely delegated to ZP members,” he said. 

“Before that, a proper training will be provided to the ZP members through Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (GIPARD),” Sawant said, adding that the training will take place from January 12 to 15, next month. 

Later speaking to media persons, Sawant said the government has proposed to build Zilla Bhavans, in North and South, a dedicated office, from where the ZP members will function. He said currently the ZP bodies have no dedicated office and they work from the Secretariat in the North and Collectorate building in the South. 

Earlier, the Chief Minister said that several former ZP members are now MLAs or Minister. “So you have lot of scope, work for people, be in touch with people, it will help you to build your political career,” he said.

The Chief Minister also urged the ZPs to focus on Atmanirbhar Goem initiative. He said that irrespective of political affiliation, the government will provide all support to the ZP members.
