PANJIM: In a bid to thwart possible smuggling of narcotics by air, Anti Narcotics Cell has decided to deploy its special team at Dabolim airport and also get an additional sniffer dog to help in detection of narcotic substances. The cell already has one sniffer dog.
The team is likely to be formed within the next fortnight, Superintendent of Police (ANC) Kartik Kashyap told Herald, after a quarterly coordination meeting with agencies concerned at the Police Headquarters, here, on Friday.
“We have discussed various strategies to curb drug abuse and decided to post a team at Dabolim airport. A sniffer dog, trained to detect narcotics, will be procured from Pune to assist the Dabolim airport team,” he said. The team will also comprise officials from narcotics control bureau among other experts.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Inspector General of Goa Police V Renganathan also discussed methods to stall attempts to traffic drugs through couriers. Representatives from various agencies such as NCB Mumbai and Goa Units, ANC, Customs, Food and Drugs Administration, Airport and CISF attended the meeting.
The officials have also decided to hold regular awareness camps to detect different types of drugs, improving conviction rate and training prosecutors to avoid mistakes during trials.
