PANJIM: While claiming that the honorarium paid to the anganwadi workers in Goa is the highest in the Country, the Akhil Goa Rajya Anganwadi Karmachari Sangh (AGRAKS) on Tuesday demanded regularization of their services.
AGRAKS also alleged that for the sake of economic status, larger number of parents are switching on to English medium play schools (crèche), thus reducing the number of students at anganwadis.
Speaking to media, AGRAKS President Netra Hoble demanded regularization of anganwadi workers. She said that there is every possibility that with reducing number of students, the anganwadis might also shut their shops thereby rendering the workers jobless.
There are over 1200 anganwadi centres in the state with 1100 teachers and workers employed in it. The honorarium of anganwadi workers was recently hiked by Rs 1500. The honorarium of the workers varies depending upon its years of service.
Hoble claimed that the honorarium paid to anganwadi workers in Goa is far better then that paid in other parts of the country. “If government can hike our salaries then we are confident that our demand of regularization would be also looked into,” she said.
Besides, honorarium, the State Government has also formulated “Retirement Benefit scheme for Anganwadi Workers/Helpers” in 2009. Under the scheme, AWWs/AWHs who attain the age of 60 years are paid an amount of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively.
