CANACONA: Suraj Sweet Mart, with five shops all over Goa is struggling to maintain the quality of the sweets and food items and frequent complaints lodged have been lodged against the shop owner for adulteration and selling substandard items.
In another case, the fourth in quick succession, a customer detected human hair in the ‘besan ladoo’ he bought on Sunday.
According to Kushwant Bhagat, a resident of Canacona, he purchased a packet of besan ladoo from the sweet mart at Chaudi for his cousin who lives in Margao.
But when the box was opened they discovered human hair in the ladoos. More hair was discovered in the other box too.
Later, in the evening, he, along with some locals went to the Canacona police station and filed a complaint against the owner of the sweet mart for selling contaminated sweets.
Police sent a team to inspect the sweet mart and sources say they found more sweets with human hair. Police collected a few samples, which they said would be sent to the FDA, Bambolim.
Police also directed the owner to keep the shop shut till FDA officials conduct further inspection. Sources present during police inspection said about 50 kgs of besan ladoos where also taken into possession by police.
It may be recalled that last month another customer who had bought makkan peda from the same shop was found to be rancid and stale and the results of the samples collected and submitted by police are still awaited.
Earlier too the same shop was in the news for allegedly supplying adulterated water packed in branded mineral water containers and selling food items even after the expiry of the shelf life.
Concerned citizens of Canacona taluka have urged the authorities to take strict action against the sweet mart as the owner had become a habitual offender and hoped authorities would wake up before someone loses their life.
