Another teenage life cut short

A 17-year-old Class XII Science student from Nessai in Sao Jose de Areal allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday night, hours after the abrupt can cellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination. During pre liminary inves tigation, police recovered a su icide note alleg edly written by the teenager. In it, he reported ly spoke about long-stand ing academic stress, saying he had been struggling for the past two years to cope with studies. He also mentioned diffi culty balancing schoolwork with hockey, a sport he pursued seriously, and ex pressed that he was unable to handle the pressure of examinations and compet itive expectations. Police said preliminary findings suggest studies and performance-related stress may have played a role in the death.

No foul play is suspected at this stage. The student also re portedly wrote that he did not want to appear for competitive examina tions anymore, intensify ing speculation that the sudden cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 earlier on Tuesday may have further aggravated his emotional distress. The tragedy has once again thrown harsh light on the crushing psycho logical burden being carried by students navigat ing India’s unfor giving examina tion culture. The teenager, described by neighbours as quiet, dis ciplined and deeply focused on academics and hockey. According to the Mai na-Curtorim police, the student lived with his parents at Nessai.
