MARGAO: Day 2 of police investigations has revealed shocking details in the murder of Fiona Fernandes, who was killed by her tiatrist husband Anthony Fernandes, at dawn on Friday.
Fiona had been working in Syria for many years. Doubting some extramarital indulgences, Anthony downloaded a voice recorder app on her phone without her knowledge on Thursday. He recorded calls and heard her conversations with a Nigerian youth, and allegedly confirmed that she had extramarital affairs.
In a fit of anger, Anthony bought petrol from a nearby petrol pump and used a kitchen knife to murder his wife, before burning her body at Monte Hill.
Margao Police recovered the knife on Saturday. They have also recovered Fiona’s blood-stained robes and mobile phone.
Anthony told the police that, at around midnight in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, he murdered his wife, slept till 2 am and later packed her corpse in a trolley bag and left the house. He went to the open compound of T B Hospital, Margao, and tried to burn the body there. As the body did not burn completely, he went back to the petrol pump at night, bought petrol and again burnt the dead body at 2.30 am.
Anthony has been remanded to 10-day police custody, while police are further investigating the matter.
The case ending in such a brutal manner is rare and frightening, and has drawn criticism from all strata of society.
